Chanhassen is a vibrant, modern city nestled just southwest of the Twin Cities, spanning nearly 23 square miles—primarily in Carver County, with portions in Hennepin County. With easy access to Minneapolis–Saint Paul via U.S. Highway 212 and State Highways 5 and 41, Chanhassen is a popular choice for both residents and businesses seeking a strong sense of community, natural beauty and convenience.

The city’s name comes from the Dakota word chanhasen, meaning “sugar-maple tree,” and its roots date back to 1896. Since officially incorporating in 1967, Chanhassen has grown steadily into a thriving community of over 25,000 residents, while maintaining its small-town charm. Guided by a Council-Manager form of government, Chanhassen’s dedicated team of leaders is focused on providing high-quality services and ensuring a high standard of living.

Community and Culture

Chanhassen lives up to its motto, “A Community for Life,” through a strong sense of pride, civic engagement and access to outstanding amenities. Residents enjoy a rich cultural landscape, highlighted by beloved institutions like the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres and Paisley Park—the former home and studio of music legend Prince. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, a national horticultural treasure, draws visitors year-round.

The city offers over 30 parks and more than 70 miles of scenic trails, providing year-round recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Community events such as the February Festival and the annual 4th of July Celebration bring neighbors together and create lasting traditions. Favorite local destinations include Lake Ann Park and the Chanhassen Recreation Center. In November 2024, Chanhassen residents voted to support a new, 300,000+ square foot community center, which will open to the public in 2028.

Chanhassen is home to a highly educated and engaged population, with 63% of residents holding a bachelor’s degree or higher. The median household income is $123,566, and nearly 88% of residents are homeowners. The city’s workforce benefits from proximity to regional job centers, as well as strong local employers including Life Time, Rosemount Inc. and Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. Key industries include manufacturing, healthcare and scientific and technical services, with most residents commuting an average of just 24 minutes to work.
