Candidate Filing for City Council
City of Chanhassen Elections
Election for Chanhassen City Council is held during state and federal election years. The city council consists of five members; the mayor and four council members, who are elected for staggered four-year terms.
Filing for City Council Seats
The terms of Mayor Elise Ryan, Councilmember Jerry McDonald and Councilmember Mark von Oven will expire at the end of 2026. Filings for these three positions will be accepted at City Hall during office hours from Tuesday, July 14, 2026, through Tuesday, July 28, 2026 (open until 5 p.m. on the final day).

To file, candidates must be:
- A citizen of the United States
- A registered voter
- A city resident for at least 30 days before the General Election
- At least 21 years of age
- Pay a $5 filing fee
- Complete an Affidavit of Candidacy (must be notarized) at City Hall.
Terms of office are for four years. The Mayor and City Council members are elected at large.
Some Chanhassen residents have Chaska or Excelsior mailing addresses. This does not affect their status as Chanhassen residents.
Candidates have until Thursday, July 30 at 5:00 p.m. to withdraw their candidacy. An affidavit of withdrawal must be completed and returned to the City Clerk to withdraw from candidacy.
Campaign Financial Reports
An initial report is due within 14 days after receiving contributions or making disbursements of more than $750.
- Subsequent reports are due 10 days before and 30 days after the election and each year by January 31 until a final report is filed.
- A final report is due when all debts are settled, and all assets are disposed of in excess of $100.
- A certificate of filing shall be submitted to the city clerk no later than seven days after the general or special election (MN Stat. 211A.05, Subd. 1)

Election Dates
The State Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, and the General Election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The city's municipal election is held in conjunction with the General Election. City offices are not on the Primary ballot but will appear on the General Election ballot.
