July 28, 2026

Phase 2 work is proceeding nicely thanks to cooperating weather and not finding underground surprises. The tunnelling operation under the railroad has been completed, a big step for the project. Watermain work can now begin. Installation of the water reuse system piping has begun, and private utility relocations are still proceeding. Once the utility work is completed, road building can begin. We are still tracking completion of Phase 2 and opening the current road closure on or around September 15. Phase 3 will begin immediately after completion of Phase 2. Phase 3 includes Market Boulevard work at the West 78^th Street intersection. Advanced notice will be posted ahead of the Phase 3 closures and detours. Thank you for your patience as we construct these vital downtown improvements. And don't forget the next Summer Shindig at Market Square happening the evening of August 18, fun for the entire family. Please continue to support the downtown businesses.

July 6, 2026

Market Boulevard is closed from Market Street South to West 79th Street, near the railroad tracks, until mid-September. Access along Market Boulevard will remain available from the north, from 78th Street to the Wendy’s and Jimmy John’s area, and from the south, from Highway 5 to West 79th Street.

Phase 1 paving and utility work is substantially complete and those areas are open to traffic. One area of Phase 1 that didn't get done is between Jimmy John’s and Wendy’s, which was delayed because of underground utility conflicts. This area will now be completed during Phase 3, which begins in mid-September.

Phase 2 includes underground utility work near the railroad tracks, construction of the downtown water reuse pump station and road widening at the railroad crossing.

June 29, 2026

Market Boulevard and Chan View are planned to be open by the end of day tomorrow, Tuesday, June 30. Today they are pouring concrete sidewalks and will do pavement markings. Tomorrow they will work on grading and restoring the boulevard areas.

The street will close again for Phase 2 beginning July 6, but this will be from the railroad tracks to (and including) Market Street. Access to West 79^th Street will remain open from Market Boulevard, and you will be able to get to the Market Square/Market Street Station (Jimmy Johns/Wendy's) driveway from West 78^th Street. We thank you for your continued patience during construction.

June 16, 2026

Phase's 1A and 1C are well underway and scheduled for completion by June 26, which is when Market Boulevard will be open with no detours for the July 4^th pause. Due to underground utility conflicts, the pavement work within Phase 1B is being shifted to Phase 3. The watermain and storm sewer work within Phase 1B however will be completed prior to the June 26 street opening. The Project Maps at the top of this project page have updated to reflect this change in phasing.

A reminder that the work along W 78^th Street is not Market Boulevard related but rather is a natural gas update project being done by Centerpoint Energy. The installation is nearing completion and restoration work has begun. The lane closures will not be in place for the July 4^th activities downtown.

May 28, 2026

The street closure for Phase 1 went into effect Monday this week. Please use Powers Blvd or TH 101 as your detour route rather than Great Plains Blvd due to congestion that can occur at that location. The closure is expected to last until June 25.

MnDOT has been actively monitoring the Hwy 5 and Great Plains intersection and making traffic signal adjustments to help mitigate vehicle queuing. Centerpoint Energy is replacing gas mains along W 78^th west of Market Blvd which has resulted in lane closures. This is expected to be done by June 8.

There is full access to the Market Blvd businesses (Market Square and Market Street Station) from either Kerber Blvd or Market Street during this phase of construction.

Market Boulevard Improvement Project Begins May 26

What’s happening: Work on the Market Boulevard Improvement Project is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 26.

Phase 1 Map legend (above): "Red" indicates an active construction area. "Pink" indicates major detour routes. "Blue" indicates local access routes. (You can also download a high-resolution version of the map by clicking here).

The big picture: The project focuses on targeted improvements to a key downtown corridor while supporting long-term accessibility, safety and infrastructure needs.

What’s included:

• Roadway resurfacing
• Utility and stormwater improvements
• Trail and sidewalk enhancements
• Railroad crossing improvements
• Traffic flow upgrades near the railroad tracks and future Roers development

The project will also help better connect the Civic Campus, City Center Park and the surrounding downtown area.

What to expect:

• Construction will happen in phases starting on May 26 and continuing through the fall
• Work will occur in stages, not all at once
• Access to businesses will remain open
• Traffic routes and access points may shift during construction
• Detour and directional signage will be posted and actively managed throughout the project, with the city and project team making clear communication and wayfinding a top priority during construction.

Phase 1: The project is divided into three phases. Phase 1, which begins May 26, includes:

• Chan View between the post office and fire station
• Market Boulevard between Market Street and W. 78th Street
• Market Boulevard between Highway 5 and W. 79th Street

A map of Phase 1 is featured above. Phase 1 is expected to last roughly four weeks and will allow all of the downtown streets to be fully open for the city's annual Fourth of July celebration. 

What’s next: Phase 2 (construction map) will begin after July 4, lasting roughly ten weeks (through early September). Phase 2 will focus on the part of Market Blvd nearest to the railroad tracks. Phase 3 (construction map) will begin in mid-September and focus on the W. 78th Street and Market Boulevard intersection. Phase 3 should last roughly six weeks and last through October. Additional details and timelines will be shared in advance of Phases 2 and 3.

The city and engineering consultant held the Preconstruction Meeting today with the contractor, Valley Paving. They will be submitting a detailed schedule for the work, broken down in phases, but they did indicate a probable starting date of Tuesday, May 26. That's when the first road closures are planned to go in place. Private utility relocation work has already begun in the area. Tree clearing and other minor removal work not requiring road closures may also start ahead of that date. A reminder that the project is planned to be constructed in phases, as shown in previous project updates.

The City Council held a public hearing and discussed several actions related to the Market Boulevard Improvement Project, marking a key step in advancing the long-planned corridor improvements into construction. The project, which has been studied and refined over several years and was formally ordered by the Council in late 2025, included consideration of awarding the construction contract, adopting the final assessment roll for impacted properties and establishing no parking zones along portions of the corridor to support safe traffic operations. 

The project scope includes full pavement rehabilitation, utility improvements, ADA upgrades and targeted roadway enhancements, including widening portions of the corridor and adding a dedicated right-turn lane at West 78th Street. A key component of the project is the implementation of a regional water reuse system, supported by a $1.1 million MPCA grant, which will help manage stormwater and provide irrigation for the Civic Campus and City Center Park. Construction is expected to begin in May, pause for the Fourth of July and be completed by the end of October, with work phased to maintain access and reduce impacts to businesses. 

The Council also reviewed bid results, with a single bid received from Valley Paving at approximately $6.1 million, about 8% over the engineer’s estimate. Staff noted the complexity of the project and recommended moving forward, citing opportunities to reduce costs through value engineering. Approximately 64% of the overall project is funded through external sources, including state aid, grants and prior agreements. 

Following the public hearing, the Council unanimously approved the construction contract, adopted the assessment roll and established additional no parking restrictions along Market Boulevard north of West 78th Street. 

Staff will give the City Council an overview of construction staging options at their February 9 work session.  A recorded presentation of the two options can be found here and in the Related Resources section below, although the business survey has closed and is no longer active. 

The Assessment Hearing for the project, where the City Council awards the construction contract and adopts the assessment roll, is scheduled for April 13, 2026. A reminder that a public open house is scheduled for April 8, at City Hall from 4:30 to 6:30 PM.

November 26, 2025
The City Council Ordered the Improvement on October 27, 2025. The project is now in final design and coordination with Twin City Western Railroad has advanced. The latest layout can be found here. The next steps are to develop construction staging plans focusing on schedule and impacts to local business access. Public outreach will continue once a staging plan is developed.

October 9, 2025
The project scope and layout have been updated to reflect City Council direction. The latest layout can be found HERE. A feasibility report is being finalized and will be considered by the City Council at their October 27, 2025 meeting. This meeting is a public hearing to consider "ordering" the project, as there are assessments planned to the adjacent property owners. If ordered by Council, the project will move into final design with the intent to bid the project in the winter and construct in the summer of 2026.

September 22, 2025

At Monday’s City Council meeting, council members reviewed an update on the Market Boulevard Improvement Project, continuing its discussion from the August 11 work session where staff was directed to prepare a scaled-down version of the project.

At the September 22 work session, staff presented an updated layout and provided details on the project schedule and budget. The discussion was intended to guide next steps, including preparation of a feasibility study and ordering the project to remain on track for construction in 2026. 

While staff outlined potential layouts and funding options at the Sept. 22 meeting, council members did not reach consensus on how best to move forward. Members weighed the competing goals of easing traffic flow, improving pedestrian safety and leveraging TIF funding, but several noted that the timing may not be right for a major project. With ongoing construction already affecting downtown, some council members expressed concern that residents may be weary of roadwork and that it could be better to revisit a larger reconstruction when traffic impacts from future downtown development are clearer. In the end, the Council opted against pursuing a full-scale overhaul of Market Boulevard at this time and instead directed staff to plan a more modest set of improvements. These targeted upgrades would focus on adding an enhanced pedestrian/bicycle path on the east side, repaving the street, traffic signal replacement at 78th Street and Market Boulevard, extending street repaving north of 78th Street (including Chan View) and making improvements at the railroad crossing.   

March 17, 2025

At it’s March 10, 2025 Work Session, the City Council decided to pause the design of the project with a goal of constructing it in 2027. This decision was based on the desire to allow the current downtown construction projects time to complete their work before impacting Market Blvd. There may be preliminary work along the corridor in 2026 in preparation for the 2027 construction schedule, but that work should not have street closures or detours. Stay tuned to the City’s communications channels and this webpage for future updates. 

February 14, 2025

The city is in the final planning stages for a street improvement project on Market Boulevard. Some of the project's goals are replacing public infrastructure, improving pedestrian/bicycle safety and mobility, and improving the safety and convenience of accessing businesses in Market Square and Market Street Station. The city is hosting an open house for area businesses (and any interested residents who wish to attend) on Friday, February 14, 2025 at 10 a.m. in the Wilder Room at the Chanhassen Library. (You can join virtually here). At the event, staff members will provide updates on the project and also share the results of a survey sent recently to adjacent downtown businesses about the project's implementation.

October 7, 2024 

An updated project layout, a traffic simulation video, and general information concerning roundabouts and pedestrian safety have been posted to the project page. The project is in the final design stages and is still scheduled to be constructed in 2025.

July 22, 2024

The Chanhassen City Council adopted a resolution on Monday, July 22, 2024, accepting the feasibility study, ordering the improvements, and authorizing the preparation of plans and specifications for the Market Boulevard Reconstruction Project No. 25-02.

March 4, 2024

The project has completed a downtown traffic study, has developed multiple conceptual layouts, and has reviewed this information with the City Council on multiple occasions over the last two months.  A public open house will be scheduled at a future date TBD.  The Market Boulevard project has strong ties to a few other projects currently ongoing including the Civic Campus, the Downtown Water Reuse, the Downtown Design Guidelines, and the Roers private development project at the SE quadrant of Market and W 78th. A Feasibility Report is being prepared and meetings with directly impacted property owners are being scheduled ahead of a formal public hearing planned for the April 22nd City Council meeting.
