The City of Chanhassen remains supportive of the proposed roundabout at the TH 41 and Minnetonka Middle School West intersection and is continuing to plan for its construction in 2028. While earlier implementation would be ideal, the detours related to the Highway 5 project make advancing construction before that time unfeasible.
In the interim timeframe until 2028, city staff and the Highway 5 project team have inquired and met with MnDOT about the possibility of a temporary traffic signal at the intersection. While the discussion was constructive, MnDOT will ultimately decide whether or not a signal is installed. Several details would still need to be worked out, including funding responsibilities and contracting arrangements. We’ll continue working with MnDOT and will share updates as we learn more.
As a reminder, the roundabout project is not a City-funded project. Funding is being provided by the State and the Minnetonka School District, with the city only responsible for a limited portion of utility work. We’ve been in regular communication with our funding partners and are doing our best to keep the project moving forward. All current funding commitments remain in place, and we’ve secured funding extensions through 2029 to maintain flexibility and protect the project timeline.
We appreciate your continued interest in this important safety and mobility improvement and will share updates as the project progresses toward final design and construction.

The City of Chanhassen, the Minnetonka School District and MnDOT have been working to implement a potential roundabout at Minnetonka Middle School West for several years and, after a thorough review, the City Council voted Monday evening to indefinitely postpone the project, citing a funding shortfall.
The project received only one bid—14.5% over the estimated cost—creating a $625,000 funding gap that the city is not in a position to cover.
Because the intersection lies along a State Highway and the underlying traffic issues are largely tied to the highway corridor itself, in concert with school operations of its only driveway access, council members agreed the funding shortfall should not be shouldered by the City and is better addressed in partnership with the school district and state agencies.
Council also noted that, while congestion remains a challenge in the broader Highway 41 corridor, future improvements may be more appropriately planned and prioritized at the regional level.
The city will continue to advocate for long-term solutions but determined that moving forward with this particular project at this time was not in the best interest of its taxpayers.
