Overview

The City of Chanhassen bills its utilities monthly. Monthly billing is standard for most utilities. In addition, monthly billing provides more timely information about water use and more frequent opportunities to identify and repair household leaks that might otherwise go undetected.

Accessing Your Online Utility Account

First time users must register using their city utility bill. Once registered, residents are able to review utility bills, make payments, and view usage trends for their accounts.

Water and sewer rates are calculated as follows:

Water

Residential / Irrigation

Fixed Charge (minimum charge per month) - $6.11

0-5,000 gallons per month- $2.68 per 1,000 gallons
5,001-10,000 gallons per month - $4.13 per 1,000 gallons
10,001-20,000 gallons per month - $4.91 per 1,000 gallons
20,001-30,000 gallons per month - $5.48 per 1,000 gallons
30,001+ gallons per month - $6.69 per 1,000 gallons

Commercial

Fixed Charge (minimum water charge per month) - $6.11

0-17,000 gallons per quarter - $2.68 per 1,000 gallons
17,001-33,000 gallons per quarter - $4.13 per 1,000 gallons
33,001-50,000 gallons per quarter - $4.91 per 1,000 gallons
50,001+ gallons per quarter - $5.48 per 1,000 gallons

Multi-family properties - uniform water rate - $3.45 per 1,000 gallons.

Bulk Sales to contractors, landscapers, etc. at City fill stations or other designated locations - $8.64 per 1,000 gallons.

MDH Safe Drinking Water Fee - $0.81 per month

Sewage

Residential

Minimum sewer charge per month - $15.26 (for amounts up to 2,000 gallons)

Plus an additional $7.63 per 1,000 gallons after your first 2,000 gallons used based on winter usage

Commercial

Minimum sewer charge per month - $15.26 (for amounts up to 2,000 gallons)

Plus an additional $7.63 per 1,000 gallons after your first 2,000 gallons used based on actual usage

The residential sewer flow charge is based on the winter water usage (the winter usage is calculated using the first three monthly billings of the new year - received at the end of January, February, and March).

Stormwater Management

The stormwater management utility fee amount charged for property within Chanhassen is based on property classification shown in the table below. The amounts shown are based on monthly billing.

The stormwater management utility fee for each parcel classified 1, 2 and 3 is a flat rate regardless of parcel size or hard-surface coverage.
The stormwater management utility fee for each parcel classified 4 through 8 is calculated at $22.24 multiplied by the utility factor and acreage of the parcel

Stormwater management utility fees are used by the city to maintain the public stormwater facilities across the entire city. These facilities include ponds, filtration basins, storm sewer pipes, catch basins, manholes, and other stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP's).

Water Testing Fees

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has mandated more stringent water quality testing procedures throughout the country. The city charges $9.72 per year for every water connection to cover our costs of the increased testing. This testing includes sending random samples to the state every week to be tested for bacteria, and once a year for lead and copper.

Note: Rental Properties will be billed to the property owner, not the tenant or renter; all accounts must remain in the property owner's name until there is a change in ownership due to a sale.

How can I check that my bill is accurate?

As a homeowner you are able to check your meter to calculate your usage at any time. The meter is generally located downstairs or in a utility room, where the water enters your home. The City of Chanhassen rounds to the nearest 1,000 gallon. This number is listed on your bill under "Current" as the current or most recent read we received from your meter.
How can I pay my utility bill?
- Automatic Payment Plan (ACH). By signing up for the city’s ACH program, the amount of your bill will automatically be deducted from your checking account on the due date. Click here to access the change form.
- Online Bill Pay. Our website allows you to make one-time payments, set up automatic payment with a checking account or credit card and view your account history. Click here to view our online billing portal.

How do I cancel my utility service if I am moving out of my residence?
