Short-Term Rentals
Overview
The City of Chanhassen's Short-Term Rental Ordinance requires that properties rented for periods of less than 30 consecutive days apply for and receive a license from the city. The required license stipulates the number of overnight vehicles that may be present on the property and requires the operators and guests of short-term rentals to abide by the following standards:
- Comply with the city's nuisance ordinance, including prohibiting noisy parties and/or gatherings and respecting the city's 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. prohibition on using sound amplification equipment.
- Provide an appropriate number of waste containers to store the trash generated by the short-term rental.
- Between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., not exceeding the maximum number of guests and vehicles stipulated by the license.
- Guest vehicles may not obstruct access to neighboring residences or emergency vehicle access.
- Provide guests with a copy of the Good Neighbor Brochure, which lists the most relevant provisions of the city's nuisance ordinance.
- Have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Violating any of these standards can result in the suspension/revocation of the license and a misdemeanor.
If you would like to report a concern regarding a short-term rental, call this 24/7 hotline: (952) 260-4995, or fill out a web form by clicking the button below.
Online Permitting
Effective January 1, 2024, all permits must be applied for online. Click the 'Submit Application' button below to access our application portal through BS&A.
The fee for short-term rental permit applications and renewals is $200. All applications must be renewed annually by February 1. If a license is applied for outside of the typical renewal period, then the application fee will be pro-rated based on the number of months remaining until the next renewal period.
Minnesota State Lodging License Required
An approved Minnesota State Lodging License (Hotel/Motel License) must now be provided at the time of license application by City Code. These licenses have always been required by state statute for short-term rental operators, but the city is now requiring them as a part of our licensing process.
