Overview

Containerized trees are available for residents to purchase through our Parks and Rec online ordering system. The tree sale will only be available to Chanhassen residents. Residents can place their order from Monday, March 30 until Friday, April 24.

There will be a maximum purchase set at 5 trees per household. Tree species availability and descriptions will be listed on the Natural Resources page as well as where you order them. Trees purchased through the residential tree sale will not be eligible for a tree rebate.

Payment must be completed at the time of purchase. Residents will pick up trees at the Public Works facility on the date designated in the receipt of payment. Please present receipt at time of pick-up.

MN Strain Redbud (SOLD OUT)

This tree will be sold in clump form in a #7-gallon container.

Small multi-trunked tree with dark green heart-shaped leaves. Small clusters of rose-pink to magenta flowers bloom early in the Spring, oftentimes before other species. An excellent pollinator plant and its small size is suitable for smaller properties. Can reach 25’ in height and 30’ in width. Prefers full sun and intolerant of wet sites. Techny Arborvitae (SOLD OUT)

Description: Evergreen that can reach 15’ tall and 15’ wide with a slow to medium growth rate and prefers full sun and can tolerate some shade. It’s a dwarf conifer that has pyramidal growth and dark green foliage that’s often used for screening.

Kentucky Coffeetree

A MN Native that can grow to be 75’ tall and 40-50’ wide. It’s considered a pest resistant tree and can tolerate a wide range of soil types but prefers full-sun. Winter twigs are coarse, heavy and upright that eventually grow to have oval shaped leaves. Click here for more information.

Autumn Gold Ginkgo (SOLD OUT)

Considered a living fossil! Light gray bark with a slightly corky feel. Can reach 50’ in height and spread 25-30’. Leaves are fan shaped and dark green that turn golden yellow in the fall. An excellent, hardy shade tree for the urban landscape. Click here for more information.

Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry (SOLD OUT)

This tree is described as a deciduous small tree or shrub that offers year-round interest. It has an upright spreading growth pattern and leaves are silvery green. This tree blooms with white clustered 5-petaled flowers. It also creates small round fruit that ripens in June. Fruit is edible to humans and can be used to make jam or eaten fresh. Small tree with white late-spring blooming flowers and bright fall fruits. Tree can reach 30’ in heigh and spread 15-20’. Leaves are compound with 11-15 leaflets. Berries are bitter but can be used for jam and a good food source for wildlife. Mountain ash is in the rose family and not susceptible to emerald ash borer. Click here for more information.

A familiar tree in MN that can grow up to 75’ tall and spread 40-65’ and is one of the faster growing oaks. Acorns provide food for a variety of wildlife and provide habitat for hundreds of species of moths and butterflies. Click here for more information.

Swamp White Oak

Described as a ‘medium height tree’ but can reach up to 65’ tall and spread 50-60’. Swamp white oaks are tolerant of alkaline soil conditions and surprisingly enough can withstand occasional drought. A great shade tree for your yard. Click here for more information.

FAQs

When do I pick up my trees?

There will be two days to pick up the trees you purchased: Friday, May 8, from 3-5 p.m., and Saturday, May 9, from 9-11 a.m. Pick-up location will be at our Public Works Facility (7901 Park Place).
Should I fertilize my tree?

Fertilizing at planting is not recommended. Trees allocate energy to root growth during the establishment period, and fertilizers can suppress rather than enhance this process. Fertilizers should only be used if you’ve identified a deficiency in the soil and your tree is suffering. Soil tests are the only way to find out if your soil is nutrient-deficient.
Do I have to call before I dig?

Yes. Minnesota law requires you to call Gopher State One Call at 811 or 1-800-252-1166 at least 48 hours prior to digging. It’s a FREE service that protects you and your property. If you are planting on Saturday, May 9, we recommend calling no later than Monday, May 4.

What tree should I plant in my yard?

Ask yourself what purpose you want the tree to serve. Do you want more shade in your yard? Swamp white oak, red oak or ginkgo may be a good choice. Do you want to have a tree that flowers? A serviceberry or redbud is a great choice! Looking for screening? Arborvitae will give you year-round screening.

It’s always important to plant for mature size. Consider proximity to structures: house, driveway, sidewalk, etc. Also, keep in mind that tree(s) must be planted in Chanhassen on private property and not within easements or the public right -of-way.
How big are the trees?

All trees in a 10-gallon container will be approximately 1-1.25” in diameter and 6-8 feet tall. The arborvitae will come in a 5-gallon container and be about 3 feet tall. The MN Redbud will come in a 7-gallon container in clump form and be about 6’ tall.
How much will the trees cost?

Trees will be available only to Chanhassen residents, and 6 of the 8 species cost $50 each. The two other species will be smaller, so they will cost less; arborvitae $15, and redbud will be $40. A maximum of 5 trees per household can be purchased.
When will I be able to order trees?

The Chanhassen Tree Sale will begin on Monday, March 30, at 12 a.m. and will be available until Friday, April 24. Click here to purchase.
