Overview

Electrical permits are required for all electrical wiring. Electrical Permits must be obtained through the State of MinnesotaThe City of Chanhassen does not issue electrical permits.

  • An owner may install wiring only on-premises they occupy as a residence or will occupy as a residence upon completion of construction.
  • It is unlawful for any person to assist an owner in installing electrical wiring unless that person is a licensed employee of a licensed electrical contractor and the electrical contractor has agreed to do the work.
  • An owner may not install electrical wiring on residential property rented, leased, or occupied by others.

Wiring Inspections

Wiring that is to be concealed must be inspected before insulating or covering the wiring. Where wiring is concealed without inspection, the person responsible for concealing it will be responsible for all costs for the removal of covering material for inspection.

If electrical wiring is to be done by a licensed electrical contractor, the electrical contractor is responsible for filing the Request for Electrical Inspection and calling for inspections.

Inspection Times

The rough-in and final inspection must be scheduled after the electrical permit has been issued. If you have questions or want to schedule an inspection, email or call Brian Luce, the State Electrical Inspector, at (612) 419-8393 between 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on weekdays.

Inspection times in Chanhassen are 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the western half of the city and 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the city's eastern half.

Note: A certificate of occupancy will be issued once a final electrical inspection has been made.
