Winter has arrived and with it comes parking regulations and snow removal guidelines. Here’s what you need to know to stay prepared and compliant this season in Chanhassen.
Winter Parking
On-street parking is prohibited November 1 to April 1, from 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily, or any time 2 inches or more of snow accumulates. This prohibition remains in place until streets are fully cleared. Vehicles parked in violation may be ticketed and/or towed.
Snow Removal
The City of Chanhassen’s Public Works department is responsible for clearing snow and managing ice across roughly 118 miles of public streets. Carver County plows all County Highways such as Powers Boulevard, Lyman Boulevard west of Highway 101, Pioneer Trail, Great Plains Boulevard south of Highway 5, Flying Cloud Drive, and Galpin Boulevard south of Highway 5. MnDOT plows State Highways 5, 7, 41, 101 and 212.
Here’s how the system works. Snow removal operations prioritize:
Priority A Routes: Main roads, steep grade routes, emergency routes, and access to schools and businesses.
Priority B Routes: Remaining residential streets.
Priority C Routes: Cul-de-sacs.
Crews strive to open most streets by 7:00 a.m. after an overnight storm, with full cleanup typically completed within 10 hours. On occasion, extreme weather conditions may impact timelines, and additional cleanup may be required.
Environmental Awareness
The city uses a calibrated approach to salt application to balance road safety with environmental concerns. Please drive carefully as roads may not always be bare or dry.
How You Can Help
Residents can assist snow removal efforts by:
• Keeping garbage and recycling bins off the streets and behind the curb line on collection days.
• Avoiding depositing snow from driveways or sidewalks into the street.
• Clearing a 3-foot radius around fire hydrants for accessibility and safety.
• Ensuring mailboxes are sturdy and meet USPS standards to withstand snow from plows.
• Keep sidewalks near your property clear of snow and ice for pedestrian safety.
