Many Chanhassen residents have recently reached out with questions after noticing dead or declining ash trees throughout the community. In most cases, the cause is Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), an invasive beetle that has spread across Minnesota and is now widespread in Chanhassen.

Minnesota has one of the highest concentrations of ash trees in the country, making communities across the state particularly vulnerable to EAB.

The city does not provide financial assistance for removing ash trees on private property. However, if an ash tree is located within the public right-of-way, the city is responsible for its management.

The city's ongoing response

Long before Emerald Ash Borer was confirmed in Chanhassen in 2021, the city developed an Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan and began educating residents about the insect and the importance of planning ahead.

Since 2023, every household in Chanhassen has also received an annual postcard with information about EAB, treatment options and resources available to property owners.

At the same time, the city continues to invest significant public resources to treat, remove and replace ash trees in parks, boulevards and other public spaces.

If an ash tree is still healthy enough, treatment may help protect it from Emerald Ash Borer. Whether treatment is appropriate depends on the condition of the tree, including how much of its canopy remains intact.
